In the Emergency Department, we are ready to take care of medical needs, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year, in case of any event you may have during a medical emergency.
It has highly qualified staff, carefully selected based on experience, courses, training and updates related to emergencies and situations of national contingency, including physicians, nurses, nurse technicians, escorts and paramedics.
We are the only hospital in Panama with physicians specialized in emergencies; the surgical physicians and medical staff are trained in trauma, cardiac and pediatric support.
The Medical-Surgical Emergency Department complies with the requirements of the Triage System in use by the best hospital world-wide.
The Triage System is a quick filter, where the patient is taken care of in the least amount of time, according to the severity of the health condition, in order to stabilize the symptoms and take immediate actions to protect the life of the patients.
On the other hand, we have a code system, designed to respond before any contingency situations that may require a prompt and immediate intervention by the licensed medical staff. Different codes can get activated depending on the circumstance.
According to the patient’s condition, the patient can be classified as critical (those requiring immediate care due to their severity); urgent and non-urgent patients, which can be sent to three different sections within the emergency department, medical consultation area, observation rooms or area for unstable patients.
Medical Consultation Area
After the first interview, the patient is transferred to one of the three emergency rooms, depending on the case: gynecology, adult and pediatric rooms.
Observation Areas
The patients with any type of body injury or urgent condition are immediately sent to the observation rooms, where the patient is monitored and lab tests, x-rays or any other exam is ordered. This information is sent electronically to admissions and patient’s medical record.
This department makes sure the diagnosis and care plan to be followed are established in less than 4 hours. It also has a priority and computerized connection with the Radiology Department, Laboratory and Cath Lab, making sure results are obtained in a period no greater than 30 minutes.
Triage of the unstable patient
The unconscious patient, with a bleeding wound, respiratory insufficiency, brain trauma, myocardial infarction, accidents or any other condition of extreme urgency is taken care of in this area, which has direct access for ambulances and three aseptic rooms with positive pressure. They have the capacity for 12 patients in serious condition, in case of massive emergencies, during which the hospital activates a code that immediately alerts and locates the licensed staff to give support.
Pediatric Emergencies
We handle pediatric emergencies and neonatal intensive care with the pediatric equipment and appropriate facilities.
